๐Ÿ“ About Dragon Boat Festival 2026

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Jie, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and is one of China's most ancient and beloved holidays. The festival primarily commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and minister of the Warring States period who drowned himself in the Miluo River in 278 BCE after his state fell to a rival kingdom. Legend holds that villagers raced out in boats to save him and threw rice into the water to prevent fish from disturbing his body, giving rise to the festival's two signature traditions. Dragon boat races feature teams of paddlers propelling long, ornately carved vessels to the rhythm of beating drums, creating a thrilling spectacle that now draws international competitors. Zongzi, pyramid-shaped parcels of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with savory or sweet ingredients, are prepared and shared among family and friends. Households also hang mugwort and calamus above their doors to ward off evil spirits. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Dragon Boat Festival is observed across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and increasingly in cities worldwide.
