๐ About World AIDS Day 2026
First observed on December 1, 1988, World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day and has served as a model for health awareness campaigns since. The red ribbon, introduced in 1991 by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus in New York, became one of the most recognized awareness symbols in history. Since the epidemic began in the early 1980s, approximately 40 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses, while roughly 39 million currently live with HIV. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy transformed HIV from a fatal diagnosis into a manageable condition, and the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets aim to ensure diagnosis, treatment, and viral suppression for nearly all people living with HIV.
