๐ About Quadrantid Meteor Shower 2027
Peaking briefly in early January over just six to ten hours, the Quadrantids can rival the Geminids in intensity, producing up to 120 meteors per hour at maximum with a notable proportion of bright fireballs. The shower takes its name from the now-defunct constellation Quadrans Muralis, identified by French astronomer Jerome Lalande in 1795 and later absorbed into Bootes. Their parent body was identified in 2003 as asteroid 2003 EH1, which may be an extinct comet that broke apart centuries ago. The Quadrantids' narrow peak window means any given location on Earth may miss the best viewing entirely, making them the most challenging major shower to observe.
